Hello and welcome to the Auslan LOTE online course!

The Learn Auslan Online team of staff are pleased to welcome you to this Auslan LOTE online course.

The first few 'Units' of this course apart, from the Powerpoint Unit, are to give the Auslan teacher information about the grammar / language of Auslan based on the Scope and Sequence points from Version 8.4 second language learner F to Level 2.

As you teach Auslan to the students you can bring up these grammar / language points as you feel relevant.

We will be creating a powerpoint of the answers to every question in the scope and sequence for the Auslan teacher (ready in March / April) however in the meantime if you have any questions you want answered then please email us at [email protected] as we've done the research, have the answers and being native and qualified deaf Auslan teachers, we also have the knowledge and the experience to provide a balanced response.

Please read this section carefully as it contains important tips and information about the course.

• At the bottom of the page is a downloadable powerpoint presentation of the curriculum for Foundation to Grade 2 and Grade 3 - 6. This is a guide to the order in which to teach Auslan to children that we have used successfully before. This also includes what signs to teach and game / activity ideas as well.

• You can, however, watch the videos in any order you wish so that what you are teaching aligns with the Auslan National Curriculum you may have to follow in your school.

• We believe that in order to teach Auslan to the students, that the Auslan teacher must first watch the videos, learn to sign correctly, prepare the lesson with any additional information, prepare the games and activities and then teach Auslan to the schools rather than show the videos in the classroom.

• The videos in this course do not have subtitles. This is because we want you to watch the movements of the signers hands, as well as the facial expressions and body language that are use throughout the course. Subtitles are distracting to achieving this. Facial expressions and body language are hugely important for deaf people, think of them as being your tone of voice.

• In the text section of each video lesson, we have included as many games and activities for the classroom as this makes Auslan even more fun for the students to learn.

• If you are finding the signing too quick to follow, click or tap on the gears icon on the bottom right hand corner of the video and then click/tap "speed". By default, the videos are set to x1, you can reduce it to .75 or .5 if you wish.

• In the 'Auslan Alphabet" course video, you'll see we have a PDF available for download of the handshapes for the Auslan alphabet. To download this PDF, just scroll to the bottom of the PDF and click or tap the link in the bottom left hand corner.

• There isn't a PDF for the “Do’s and Don’t’s of Fingerspelling”. For “Fingerspelling Practice” and every video lesson after there is a downloadable PDF. Downloading these PDF's is the same process as above.

• These PDF's contain a list of all the words / sentences used in the video. We do not have pictures available of the signs taught. The movement of your hands when signing is just as important as the handshape.

• For each video lesson there is a short text message so please ensure you read that for any guidance with the video.

• After each video lesson there is a comment section where you can make comments / ask questions and we will respond to them as quickly as possible.
